How pleased and blessed was I
to hear the people cry,
‘Come, let us seek our God today!’
Yes, with a cheerful zeal
we haste to Zion’s hill
and there our vows and honours pay.2. Zion, O happy place
adorned with wondrous grace,
and walls of strength her streets surround;
God’s people here draw near
to pray, and praise, and hear
the glorious gospel’s joyful sound.3. There David’s greater Son
has fixed his royal throne,
he sits for grace and judgement there;
he makes his people glad,
he makes the sinner sad,
and humble souls rejoice with fear.4. May peace attend your gate,
and joy within you wait,
to bless the soul of every guest!
All those who seek your peace,
and pray for your increase,
a thousand blessings on them rest!5. My tongue repeats her vows,
‘Peace to this living house!’
For here my friends and family dwell;
and, since my glorious God
makes you his blessed abode,
my soul will always love you well!
Hosea 4:1-19Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,for the LORD has a controversy with the inhabitants of the land.There is no faithfulness or steadfast love,and no knowledge of God in the land;2 there is swearing, lying, murder, stealing, and committing adultery;they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed.3 Therefore the land mourns,and all who dwell in it languish,and also the beasts of the fieldand the birds of the heavens,and even the fish of the sea are taken away.4 Yet let no one contend,and let none accuse,for with you is my contention, O priest.5 You shall stumble by day;the prophet also shall stumble with you by night;and I will destroy your mother.6 ¶ My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge;because you have rejected knowledge,I reject you from being a priest to me.And since you have forgotten the law of your God,I also will forget your children.7 The more they increased,the more they sinned against me;I will change their glory into shame.8 They feed on the sin of my people;they are greedy for their iniquity.9 And it shall be like people, like priest;I will punish them for their waysand repay them for their deeds.10 They shall eat, but not be satisfied;they shall play the whore, but not multiply,because they have forsaken the LORDto cherish11 whoredom, wine, and new wine,which take away the understanding.12 ¶ My people inquire of a piece of wood,and their walking staff gives them oracles.For a spirit of whoredom has led them astray,and they have left their God to play the whore.13 They sacrifice on the tops of the mountainsand burn offerings on the hills,under oak, poplar, and terebinth,because their shade is good.Therefore your daughters play the whore,and your brides commit adultery.14 I will not punish your daughters when they play the whore,nor your brides when they commit adultery;for the men themselves go aside with prostitutesand sacrifice with cult prostitutes,and a people without understanding shall come to ruin.15 Though you play the whore, O Israel,let not Judah become guilty.Enter not into Gilgal,nor go up to Beth-aven,and swear not, “As the LORD lives.”16 Like a stubborn heifer,Israel is stubborn;can the LORD now feed themlike a lamb in a broad pasture?17 Ephraim is joined to idols;leave him alone.18 When their drink is gone, they give themselves to whoring;their rulers dearly love shame.19 A wind has wrapped them in its wings,and they shall be ashamed because of their sacrifices.
GLORIOUS things of thee are spoken,Zion, city of our God!He whose word cannot be broken,formed thee for His own abode.On the Rock of Ages founded,what can shake thy sure repose?With salvation’s walls surrounded,thou may’st smile at all thy foes.2 See! the streams of living waters,springing from eternal love,well supply thy sons and daughters,and all fear of want remove:who can faint while such a riverever flows their thirst to assuage –grace which, like the Lord the giver,never fails from age to age?3 Round each habitation hovering,see! the cloud and fire appear,for a glory and a covering,showing that the Lord is near:thus deriving from their banner,light by night and shade by day –safe, they feed upon the mannawhich he gives then when they pray.4 Saviour, if of Zion’s cityI through grace a member am,let the world deride or pity,I will glory in Thy name:fading is the worldling’s pleasure,all his boasted pomp and show;solid joys and lasting treasurenone but Zion’s children know.
Brothers, join in imitating me, and keep your eyes on those who walk according to the example you have in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself. Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for, my joy and crown, stand firm thus in the Lord, my beloved.
LOVED with everlasting love,led by grace that love to know,Spirit, breathing from above,You have taught me it is so.O this full and perfect peace!O this rapture all divine!In a love which cannot cease,I am His and He is mine.2 Heaven above is softer blue,earth around is sweeter green;something lives in every hueChristless eyes have never seen:birds with gladder songs o’erflow,flowers with deeper beauties shine,since I know, as now I know,I am His and He is mine.3 His for ever, only His;who the Lord and me shall part?Ah, with what a rest of blissChrist can fill the loving heart!Heaven and earth may fade and flee,first-born light in gloom decline,but while God and I shall be,I am His and He is mine.
Church of God, elect and glorious,
holy nation, chosen race;holy nation, chosen race;called as God’s own special people,
royal priests and heirs of grace:
know the purpose of your calling,
show to all his mighty deeds;
tell of love which knows no limits,
grace which meets all human needs.
2. God has called you out of darkness
into his most marvellous light;
brought his truth to life within you,
turned your blindness into sight.
Let your light so shine around you
that God’s name is glorified
and all find fresh hope and purpose
in Christ Jesus crucified.
3. Once you were an alien people,
strangers to God’s heart of love,
but he brought you home in mercy,
citizens of heaven above.
Let his love flow out to others,
let them feel the Father’s care,
that they too may know his welcome
and his countless blessings share.
4. Church of God, elect and holy,
be the people he intends,
strong in faith and swift to answer
each command your Master sends:
royal priests, fulfil your calling
through your sacrifice and prayer;
give your lives in joyful service,sing his praise, his love declare.
BEHOLD the amazing gift of lovethe Father has bestowedon us, the sinful sons of men,to call us sons of God.2 Concealed as yet this honour lies,by this dark world unknown,a world that knew not, when He came,even God’s eternal Son.3 High is the rank we now possess,but higher we shall rise;though what we shall hereafter beis hid from mortal eyes.4 Our souls, we know, when He appears,shall bear His image bright;for all His glory, full disclosed,shall open to our sight.5 A hope so great and so divinemay trials well endure,and purge the soul from sense and sin,as Christ Himself is pure.
